Visio Divina:  The Word and Art of the Illuminated Bible

 Books of the Prophets

This is your opportunity to experience the Word of God through the art of illumination and calligraphy.  In a tradition all but replaced by the printing press centuries ago, text and illumination bring the Word of God to life, inviting us into a rich and varied creation.  We will specifically explore the Saint John's Bible, the first illuminated bible to be created since the Middle Ages.  In celebration of the new millennium, the monks of St. John's Abbey in Collegeville, MN commissioned this work, which draws on and updates Eastern iconographic and Western sacred art traditions.  It is certainly one of the most significant sacred art achievements of our time.  In our study, we will look at the history of illuminated bibles, gain insights into the thought processes and artistic vision of the images, but more importantly, experience the scriptural texts more deeply.

Cost:  $15.00 for text, payable at the first session.
